Westside Story: social networking and performance day to encourage new collaborations

Liverpool, not Bristol, is the capital of culture and hosts this years Turner prize (won by Mark Wallinger for 'Sleeper' a piece
about dressing up as a bear for 7 nights in a major Berlin gallery). Bristol art critic Barry the Badger believes the South West has many of these great cultural ingredients. He punctuated this with a tour of the Arnolfini in Dec 07 on the night of the prize giving. Culture should be judged on how strong our grass roots are and not just the extravagances of the YBAs of yester year.

So Kangaroo Kourt thought it would try to foster some new relations between South West and North West. We hope to host an event including artists from some of the big towns of the northwest such as Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds to join with those from Bristol in 204, a venue in Bristol prepared to stick its neck out for grass roots culture.

And poetry, music and live art: Including slam champion Pete Hunter, Pat Reid’s band the Great Admirers and Barry the Badger (starred in BBC3 program Upstaged- http://creaturemag.com/seven/kangaroo-kourt.html) And a mobile van gallery will be there on the Saturday. The van gallery is putting the call out to artists wishing to develop site specific work for a Luton van, or display existing work, develop the outside of the van with murals and such or just take the Luton to a festival with a sound system and 8 pots of paint!? Our van is yours . . . Go to www.minigallery.info for full details

145 Collective (from Manchester and Leeds) will be setting up a mixed media collage installation based on a flash animation/narrative in the windows and throughout the space (which will be showing through until 23rd). During that day artists will be invited to contribute to the installation, show films and perform. The aim is to connect some more like minds and discuss what exchanges/collaborations can take place in 2009 between South West and North West based artists.

More about 204...................

204 is a space for contemporary art in the windows of a vacant shop in the busy Gloucester road area of Bristol. 204 is steadily establishing itself as an exciting venue for contemporary art in Bristol. It is a venue for artists to use for work that may not suit the commercial gallery set-up, often using the space in innovatative and experimental ways.

Their aim is to bring art to all members of the community through display in the window and a continuing dialogue with the public about what art can be. The interior of the shop has now also been made available for use by artists.

204 is pleased to invite artists from all disciplines to make an exhibition proposal for November 2008. We are looking for
coherent bodies of work, either from single artists or artists working collaboratively. The selected artist/s will be given sole
use of the space (roughly 32 meters squared) for the duration of the show. The artist will be permitted to have a preview at a time of their choice and will be given a press and publicity list for their use to promote their show. They will also be allocated a page on the 204 website to present their related work for publicity now and in the future.
